Both declarative and procedural knowledge play an important role in higher education, and both forms of knowledge are essential for effective learning and academic success. By using an adaptive learning system, students spend less time acquiring the building blocks upon which they can build further during a course.

Based on a computer model of the learners’ memory, the adaptive learning system of MemoryLab determines which items should be presented to the learner at which point during the learning session, effectively tailoring the learning procedures to the needs of each individual learner. By integrating MemoryLab into a broad range of courses, the distribution of learning improves and students’ motivation and their classroom readiness greatly increases.

Data from a pilot conducted at the University of Groningen during the 2023-2024 academic year, where students voluntarily used MemoryLab to prepare for their cognitive psychology course, suggests the following insights:

  • More students decided to take part in the exam in 23-24 (83.3%) than in 22-23 (75.5%)
  • More students passed the exam in 23-24 (74.7%) than in the year before (57.0 %)
  • Fewer students failed the exam 8.6% instead of 18.4%, respectively

Key findings

Overall our results indicate that:

  • Learning outcomes improved, with more students passing and fewer failing, demonstrating MemoryLab’s support for both high-achievers and those needing extra help, reducing performance gaps.
  • Offering an organized, structured approach through a tool like MemoryLab, powered by an effective algorithm, provides that support and encourages participation.
