Times Tables by MemoryLab

Country:

Target group:

Primary education

Use case:

One of the important educational goals in primary school education is the automatisation of the times tables. In Times Tables by MemoryLab, children will practise the times tables at three progressive levels of learning and at a level that is specifically tailored to the skill level of each child. Every learning level is optimised for long-term recall of the times tables. Drawing from data across three levels, the algorithm identifies the multiplications most likely to be forgotten and integrates them into the practice.

  • Level 1: No algorithm is applied.
  • Level 2: Adapts based on an accuracy algorithm.
  • Level 3: Introduces a time limit per question to help learners automate their responses and prevent them from ‘calculating the answers’.

This solution is grounded in the latest cognitive science research, optimized for effectiveness, usability, and alignment with classroom practices. It has been tested with over 500 children aged 6–11 in more than 11 classrooms.

Highlights

A graph showing results from our pilot collaboration on times Tables by MemoryLab

Based on our pilot with Times Tables by MemoryLab, conducted from October 2023 until April 2024, we have gathered the following insights on our two algorithms from level 2 and level 3:

  • Differences in fact difficulty are highly consistent across levels, and some facts are inherently more difficult than others. Adaptability helps in memorizing each fact accordingly.
  • Accuracy remains high across both levels, with learners achieving 90.1% accuracy in level 2 and 86.1% in level 3 on average.
  • Learners become faster in level 3, solving one multiplication in 2,4 seconds on average.

Key findings

We have shown in multiple studies that our algorithm is effective for learning factual knowledge, and here we demonstrate its success in teaching times tables as well.

  • Introducing a time limit per question allows learners to automatise the responses and disallows them from ‘calculating the answer’. With a time limit and our adaptive algorithm learners became faster at giving the answer to the multiplication
  • We developed a step-by-step method incorporating three levels of increasing difficulty, designed to guide children from the basics to mastery. By continuously assessing the learner’s progress and personalising fact repetition, we can optimise learning efficiency and long-term retention.
